The study follows the assassination and mythologization of Horst Wessel, a young and ambitious SA member, who was attacked and murdered on 14 January 1930.The attackers were most likely communists, and Joseph Goebbels immediately recognized the propaganda potential of this event. In the following years Horst Wessel became the hero of the Nazi movement. Daniel Siemens discusses the background to Wessel's murder and traces the ways in which he was made into a national hero.
