Book Donation Policy

Book Donation Policy

The Sourasky Central Library thanks readers, researchers, scholars, and members of the community who wish to donate books to the library’s collection.

Donors are responsible for reading the library’s book donation policy before submitting books for donation. Submitting books to the library constitutes agreement to this policy.

The library accepts book donations selectively, in accordance with its collection development policy, the library’s core subject areas, and its professional judgment.

Book Donation Criteria

The library accepts only books that meet all of the following criteria:

  • The books are relevant to the core subject areas of the Central Library: The Humanities and the Arts only.
  • The books are in one of the following languages: Hebrew, Arabic, or English.
  • The books are in good physical condition. Worn, stained, marked, torn, mouldy, or otherwise damaged books will not be accepted.
  • The materials are complete. Individual journal issues, individual volumes from multi-volume sets, miscellaneous pamphlets, and magazines will not be accepted.

Delivering Donations to the Library

  • The library does not collect book donations from the donor’s home or office. Donors are responsible for bringing the books to the library.
  • Large donations, including boxes of books, collections, and estates, will not be accepted without prior approval and coordination with Ms. Anat Clara Hirsch, Gifts and Donations Coordinator.
  • Permission to bring a donation to the library, whether given by phone, email, orally, or by any other means, does not constitute a commitment to accept the donation or to add the books to the Library’s collections. The library’s willingness to review a donation does not constitute agreement to accept it.

Checking Whether Donated Books Were Added to the Collection

  • Donations may not be made conditional upon receiving an update regarding whether the books have been added to the library’s collection.
  • The library does not notify donors by email, by phone, or by any other means whether a donated book has been added to the library’s collections.
  • Donors who wish to check whether a specific donated book has been added to the library’s collection may do so independently through DaTA, the Tel Aviv University Libraries catalogue, approximately two months after submitting the donation.
  • If the book does not appear in the catalogue, it should be assumed that it was not added to the library’s collections.

Books Not Added to the Collection

  • Donations may not be made conditional upon the return of books to the donor if they are not added to the library’s collections. The library does not return donated books to donors.
  • The library reserves the right to determine, at its sole professional discretion, whether to add donated books to its collections, offer them as giveaways, offer them for sale, or remove them from the library by other means.

Donations Sent Without Prior Coordination

The library assumes no responsibility for the handling or disposition of donations received by courier or by mail without prior coordination and formal approval.

Books Previously Received as Donations

The library reserves the right to withdraw books previously received as donations, even if they bear an ex libris label or any other marking indicating the source of the donation.
