The Library

The Sourasky Central Library, established in 1954 and located at the very heart of the University Campus in Ramat Aviv, houses a vast collection of items in the fields of the Humanities, Arts, and beyond, serving Tel Aviv University students, faculty members, and administrative staff, as well as associates, fellows, and researchers from all over Israel and the world

Opening Hours History

The library was founded in 1954 whence the University was still located at the Abu Kabir Campus in the South of Tel Aviv.


The expansion of the University and the establishment of the Academic Institute for Jewish Studies lead to the foundation of the Library, which later took the name of its benefactor, Elias Sourasky.


In 1968, the library moved to its current location at the center of Campus, and, in 1984, the Wiener-Gruss Building was erected adjacent to the main building.


The three floors of the main building house several special collections, institutions, and research facilities and archivessome are held at the Wiener-Gruss building.



Opening Hours The Collection

The collection holds items in the fields of Humanities and the Arts, as well as several interdisciplinary fields such as History and Philosophy of Science, Gender Studies, Environmental Studies, Security Studies, Ethnography, and much more.


The varied collection consists of over one million items, including books and periodicals (printed, electronic, digital) as well as archival material, in an "Open Shelf" arrangement, mainly based on the Dewey Decimal Classification System.


Over 30% of the collection is in English, about 15% Hebrew, 14% German, 6% Arabic, and the rest in various other languages, including African and Middle- and Far-Eastern languages.


The library is affiliated with several sub-libraries found throughout the campus as well several archives and institutions.
