Cataloging, Metadata, and Technical Services

The Cataloging, Metadata, and Technical Services Section is in charge of handling all items, both printed and digital format, prior to their arrival to the Reading Halls, according to various Classification Systems and International Standards

 

Opening Hours Classification

Classifying and assigning subject headings to all library acquisitions: books, periodicals, and non-printed materials in almost every language (with the exception of Arabic).

The subject headings are defined in accordance with the standards of the Library of Congress.

Classification systems in use:

  • Dewey Decimal Classification System: majority of books and periodicals held by the library
  • The Shalom System: Judaism and the History of the Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael Studies)
  • The Library of Congress System: Music and Musicology
  • The Wiener Collection System: internal system for physical items and archival material

 

Opening Hours Foreign Languages Cataloging

Cataloging books, periodicals, and non-printed materials, such as music, digital items, and websites, in almost every language, except those written in Hebrew or Arabic letters

Up to April 2014, cataloging procedures followed the AACR2 International Standard. Since then RDA Standard has replaced it.

 

Opening Hours Hebrew Cataloging

Cataloging all printed and non-printed materials written in the Hebrew language or in Hebrew letters, including publications in Yiddish, Ladino, and Judeo-Arabic.

 

Opening Hours Arabic Cataloging

Cataloging and classifying all printed and non-printed materials in Arabic, mainly focusing on the following subject fields: Islam, Arabic Linguistics and Literature, History of the Middle East.

The librarians are also responsible for developing the library's collections in these areas in collaboration with the departments of Arabic Language and Literature and History of the Middle East.

 

Opening Hours Technical Services

Providing barcodes and labels attached to all library physical items, as well as the coordination of binding and restoration procedures.
